Cuil.com copying PICNIC's search results structure and look and feel
Cuil.com (pronounced Cool) was Business Weeks most successful US startup in 2008
Cuil.com was voted the US's most successful start up for 2008, by Business Week. They claim to have indexed 3 times more pages then Google and 10 times more pages than Microsoft. What is more interesting ... they have the same structure and look and feel to their search results page as PICNIC!!!
When you compare their search results structure and look and feel with PICNIC's it is quite interesting to see the similarities. They have chosen for 2 and 3 columns instead of a vertical list of links. Also they have chosen to show images next to the text links. Which is the same as on PICNIC's search results page. What they are missing which we do have on PICNIC's search results page is a way to filter the keyword results based on a certain criteria. When searching the keyword "picnic" on cuil, com, our site picnicnetwork.org comes up 3rd which is the same at on google.com.

2009 top 10 trends related to cross media
PICNIC summarizes the top 10 trends talked about during the PICNIC 08 Cross media week and heard about in the PICNIC network of cross media professionals
PICNIC 08 speakers talked a lot about the trends and developments they are seeing in the world and what this means for (cross media) businesses. PICNIC has now summarized these into the top 10 PICNIC trends, in no particular order.
1. Balance - fun versus important: There was much talk about having reached saturation point in terms of sharing our lives online. Which sharing services are actually adding real value to our personal lives and take less of a chunk out of our valuable time. Most of these sites are fun but not important. 2009 will be a year for services that help people balance life and work, pleasure and profession, off-line and on-line.
2. Transparency and conversation: Some call it Feedback 3.0 or joining the conversation rather than listening quietly. Companies are being required to react not just listen to consumers. 2009 will be a year of transparency by companies and loyalty being driven by interacting/conversing with consumers.
3. Openness: More and more services online are opening up and linking with other online services, for instance in the social networking space. As companies realize they do not own people and their data, the owner of the data is the person themselves and they have a right to decide what is done with their data. 2009 will be a year of consolidation in social networking and microblogging and opening up of platforms, so users can use one login and move their ...

PICNIC at LeWeb 08
PICNIC had the pleasure of attending LeWeb 2008 in Paris hosted by Loïc Le Meur and his wife Geraldine.
This year's LeWeb took place over 2 days in the recently opened "Cent Quatre" situated on the outskirts of Paris in the 19th arrondissement. The location was a large impressive industrial building with a light open atrium in the middle, surrounded by numerous smaller intimate rooms and a theatre.
LeWeb's programme included many on the who's who in the internet industry, including inspirational speakers and challenging moderators, always graciously introduced by Loïc.
Of course PICNIC looked at LeWeb with a critical eye, noting both positives and negatives, and taking away a few learnings to improve PICNIC in upcoming editions. We know how difficult and expensive it is to get the little things right, which also happen to be the things attendees are the first to animately blog about.
PICNIC loved the theme of LeWeb this year "LOVE". Loïc compared being an entrepreneur to falling in love. Having spoken with or listened to a number of start up founders during the 2 days it appears this observation is pretty accurate, as they seemed to have a warm glow about them.
We especially liked the theme due to today's economic climate and most of the speakers did a good job of carrying the theme through their presentations or linking their speech to love in some way. However we would have liked to have heard even more of this through-out the programme.
In our view the most inspiring or convincing speakers were Chris Anderson from TED.com talking about Global IQ, Helen Fisher with her latest research about the drive to love, Suzan Wo from Ohai about Virtual goods, Dr Brian Cox from Manchester University passionately talking about the universe and Marissa Mayer from Google who despite constant prods from Michael Arrington from TechCrunch answered questions calmly and confidently and probably made the audience "love" Google even more.
The PICNIC team had heard so many reports of the amazing food at LeWeb, so by 1pm on the first day we were licking our lips in anticipation of ze french "haute cuisine" . After queuing for ages and pouncing on the service personnel when they passed with new trays of little goodies we devoured the little pots of delights. The food was indeed gorgeous, as you would expect from the...

Amsterdam-based cross-media festival goes international

A total of 8,535 professionals from the creative and technology industry from more than 100 countries took part in one or more of the sessions at the PICNIC’08 event. A third of the conference delegates were visiting from abroad. Added to which, no less than 3,000 people watched the PICNIC live video stream.
Visitors could choose from an abundant programme of events including a high-level international conference as well as numerous 'Specials', 'Labs' and other partner events. PICNIC has evolved into a platform that is becoming increasingly interesting for international parties as well. During the event, specials were offered by the European Broadcasting Union, the European Journalism Centre and various other international organisations. Connections and Creativity: Where are the New Frontiers?
by Madanmohan Rao, PICNIC 2008 Ambassador and Editor of “The Knowledge Management Chronicles”
In the first couple of days, we looked at a range of frameworks and case studies of how new media are helping creative communities, and the last day of PICNIC had a dazzling array of discussions and debates on future trends and fads in this field.
Here is my pick of the top ten trends to watch for in the coming years -- email me at madan@techsparks.com with your thoughts and responses!
1. The Rise of “Professional” Social Networking
Popular models of Web 2.0-based social networking on consumer or citizen sites will extend to professional communities within and outside organisations as well. Witness the rise of OpenAd, SellABand and Blurb, which are more than just communities of interest in advertising, music or publishing – but well-developed networks of professional services.
2. Citizen media brings political power to the people
From the US to the far reaches of Africa (as the one-day track “Surprising Africa” so powerfully revealed), citizens are claiming control over the narrative affecting their lives. This is being amplified by traditional media and diaspora populations, and giving power to the people – though much more struggle will be needed to fully transform dictatorial regimes or unilateralist powers.
3. Mobile communication is opening up unprecedented value chains
From the use of airtime as currency in developing countries to the growing demand for “snack media” in mature economies, mobile communication is both extending the shelf-life of existing content to creating entirely new forms of economic transaction for stakeholder communities.
4. “Everything now for me”
The combination of universal search, immediate access, and personalised communities is giving rise to a culture where people expect to be able to search the entire “info-cloud” and immediately connect to ...
